Put New Tires in the Back
If you're just getting two new tires at a time, put them on the back axle. Having solid traction in the rear of your vehicle will give you greater control in slippery situations versus putting the better traction at the front of the vehicle.
Be Aware of Tread Depth and Overall Condition
Your tires' tread is another important factor in strong traction and safe driving. Get in the habit of checking out your tires regularly, looking for any signs of wear as well as low tread. You can check the tread of a tire by placing a quarter upside down in the tread. If the space above Washington's head is visible, your tread is too low and the tire needs replaced.
Keep a Close Eye on Tire Pressure
It's important to keep your tires at their recommended pressure. You can usually find this number inside the driver's door on the sill. Keeping your tire pressure at the recommended level will not only give you the best efficiency, but it will also give you the best traction and therefore maximum control and safety. Check your tire pressure every month or so, or before you head out on a long trip, but keep in mind that tire pressure tends to fluctuate more in cold temperatures.
